WHAT ARE SHAPED NOTES?

The term "shape notes" denotes a musical notation system where the seven tones of the musical scale are each given a different shape.  It makes music reading faster because one learns to associate the shape with the tone's sound.  It has been used mainly in the South to facilitate congregational singing.  The song "Amazing Grace" written in shape notes is below.
