WHAT ARE SHAPED NOTES? The term "shape notes" denotes a musical notation system where the seven tones of the musical scale are each given a different shape. It makes music reading faster because one associates the shape with the tone's sound. It has been used mainly in the South to facilitate congregational singing. To see a song written in shape notes, click here. You may also visit the Wikipedia article on shape notes.
