28th Annual Session of Cumberland Valley School of Gospel Music in June 2010 Is Now History! Cumberland Valley School of Gospel Music held its 2010 two-week session teaching shape-note gospel music, June 14-June 25, on the campus of Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee. Students enjoyed two weeks of learning, fellowship and fun culminating in a Closing Night Session where their skills were showcased for parents and visitors. WHAT ARE SHAPED NOTES? The term "shape notes" denotes a musical notation system where the seven tones of the musical scale are each given a different shape. It makes music reading faster because one associates the shape with the tone's sound. It has been used mainly in the South to facilitate congregational singing.
